A few years into dividend investing I pulled my portfolio up next to the S&P 500 for the first time, and honestly, I didn’t like what I saw. My dividend checks had been getting bigger every month, so I assumed I was winning, and the index had been beating me the whole time. What I owned was consumer staples, healthcare and financials, the stuff everyone calls safe, with almost no technology because tech didn’t pay a dividend worth collecting.
👉 On a YTD basis, my portfolio has nearly doubled the return of the S&P500.
Three changes to how I run the money did, and the dividend income I built in those slow early years is what funds all three. I’ll share the adjustments I’ve made and why it has worked out.
